S5-DGIS Mid Length
The S5-DGIS Mid Length Description refers to a United Defense Manufacturing Corp. (UDMC) rifle utilizing a mid-length gas system for a “softer” and more reliable shooting experience compared to standard carbine-length systems. This design features an 11.25-inch gas tube and a forward gas port to reduce pressure and heat on the bolt carrier group, enhancing longevity and reducing maintenance. The S5-DGIS itself is a semi-automatic, 5.56 NATO rifle based on the AR-15 platform, popular with Philippine law enforcement and military personnel.
Key Features and Design Elements:
• Direct Gas Impingement System (DGIS): The rifle uses a traditional DGIS, where hot gases from the barrel are directed into the bolt carrier group to cycle the weapon.
• Mid-Length Gas System: A key innovation, the mid-length gas tube is 11.25 inches long, compared to the 9.75-inch standard carbine length.
• Forward Gas Port: The gas port is positioned closer to the muzzle, seven inches from the tip, which reduces the amount of gas pressure rammed into the BCG.
• Benefits of the Mid-Length System:
• Softer Recoil: Less gas pressure makes the rifle feel "softer" and more comfortable to shoot.
• Reduced Heat and Wear: Less heat flows back into the bolt and bolt carrier group, leading to a longer lifespan and less maintenance.
• Improved Functionality: It mimics the efficient and reliable performance of longer-barreled rifles while using shorter barrels.
• Barrel Options: Available with various barrel lengths, including 14.5 and 16-inch barrels, often featuring 4150 steel or SS-416R stainless steel.
• Floating Railguard: The mid-length system requires a longer handguard, often a T6 aluminum KeyMod rail, which floats the barrel for improved accuracy.
• Target Users: The S5-DGIS is a semi-automatic rifle available to active members of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and other law enforcement agencies.
